Make Your Pumpkin Compostable

Did you know?

  • About 1 biillion pounds of pumpkins are sent to landfills each year.
  • Dried acrylic paint can linger in the environment, potentially harming wildlife and ecosystems.

Making thoughtful choices now means your pumpkins won’t end up in the landfill later — and the nutrients can go back into the earth instead of creating waste. Here is how you make your pumpkin compostable?

Skip the Paint

Most paints, including acrylic and even washable or water-based ones, contain plastics that can leave behind microplastics in compost.

If You Do Paint

Choose biodegradable paints made with natural pigments & binders, like watercolors, gouache, or egg tempera. Even better – wipe paint before composting!

Avoid Extras

Glitter, stickers, candles, and other non-biodegradable add-ons should be left off in order to compost later.

Compost

Bring your pumpkin to the transfer station or give it to your food scrap hauler.
