Energy-efficient gadgets are fun. They save energy. And, they save you money too!

STAY INFORMED

“Vampire Load” is the energy that your electronics consume even when they are in sleep mode. On average this adds $200 to your annual energy bill.

Smart or programmable thermostat

A programmable thermostat can be set to reduce heating and cooling when you are away or asleep, potentially saving you up to $180 per year! Smart thermostats are another option. They automatically adjust the temperature based on your behavior.

There are a number of options available with varied features at different price points.

EnergizeCT and Eversource offer an instant rebate online or a redeemable coupon to be used in participating retailers for ENERGY STAR Certified, WiFi enabled smart thermostats.

Smart power strip

You probably already use power strips in your home but switching to a smart power strip could save you up to $200 a year.

There are many different types of smart power strips. Some work on programmable schedules, some use a remote switch, and some are based on the status of a master device that controls the power in other outlets so that when you turn off one, electricity is cut to all.

It’s true that some devices, such as computers or printers, may not respond well to an abrupt power loss, so for these devices look for power strips with energy-saving modes.

Energy monitors

An energy monitor connects to a circuit breaker and displays your entire home’s energy use – often in great detail. It can help you find ways to make your home more energy efficient. (Note: It is recommended that a qualified electrician handle the installation.)

Wattmeter
A wattmeter is actually fun to use. Simply plug it into your outlet and then into an appliance, such as a blender or a toaster, and get a measure of its electricity needs. You might be surprised at what you find!

TIP
