The Westport Conservation Department reminds Westp

The Westport Conservation Department reminds Westport residents and landscape crews that this is the start of the second year of prohibition for gas-powered leaf blowers in Westport.

This ordinance will start this Thursday and conclude on October 15th.

Not sure what to use instead? Consider an electric or battery-powered leaf blower, rakes, brooms or lawn sweepers. And help spread the word by sharing this post with neighbors, friends and landscapers.

No Mow May? Good first step. Here's how to really make it count.

1️⃣ For areas where you walk or play, grow a no-mow lawn! Dwarf grasses like ‘Dog Tuff’ grass stay low all season long so they never need to be mowed.
2️⃣ For low traffic areas, replace your lawn with groundcover perennials, like Creeping Thyme Creeping Veronica or others that never need mowing.
3️⃣ For the ultimate upgrade, replace parts of your lawn with a perennial garden with stepping stones where you need to walk or better yet, a low maintenance meadow to attract and feed pollinators.

This Easter, consider a few simple sustainable swaps to reduce waste and help our environment:

✅ Opt for shredded paper rather than single use plastic grass
✅ Invest in a reusable basket that last year after year
✅ Consider giving gently-used toys a second life
✅ Look for candy in bulk to cut down on packaging waste
✅ Challenge yourself to limit all small plastic, including easter eggs! Switch to biodegradable or wooden eggs instead.
